DFCM Resident Physicians Sweep PAFP Research Contest

Resident physician trainees of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Philippine General Hospital, UP Manila, romped away with all the awards in the Residents’ Research Contest, both Analytical and Descriptive Categories, held during the Annual Convention of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians, Philippine International Convention Center, this February 2011.

The papers “Effectiveness of Blood Pressure Monitoring Card on Pharmacoadherence and Hypertension Control:  A Randomized Controlled Trial” by Dr. Louie Ocampo, “The Effectiveness of a Clinical Pathway Checklist for Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Improving the Appropriateness of Care and the Issues with its use Among Resident Physician Trainees” by Dr. Vivien Fe Fadrilan and “Effectiveness of Designated Treatment Partners Among Adult Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2:  A Randomized Controlled Trial” by Dr. Rojim Sorrosa, won first, second and third place respectively in the Analytical Division.  Similarly, the papers “Effects of Financial Capacity on Accessibility of Health Care Among Patients Consulting at the Family Medicine Clinic, UP-PGH” by Dr. Amor Dulce Rivera and “Degree of Burnout among Family Medicine Resident Trainees” by Dr. Mari Joanne Joson garnered first and second respectively in the Descriptive Category.

These researches were selected from among all the papers submitted by around 40 accredited training hospitals in Family Medicine.  The winning residents received a plaque and a substantial cash prize.  This achievement duplicates the 2009 edition of the contest, where the first two places were won by entries from PGH DFCM.  Last year, the winning entry also got first place in the inter-department Research Competition of PGH.

In the same convention, the DFCM Team placed second in the Inter-hospital Clinico-Pathologic Case Competition.  The CPC discussion involved a case of abdominal enlargement; the team from Quezon City General Hospital came out on top of the judges’ scorecards.

To further consolidate the victory of the department, graduate resident Dr. Jonathan Babsa–ay topped the Diplomates’ Board Examination.  There was a tie for this year; a graduate of Cebu Institute of Medicine – Velez General Hospital shared first place.

In addition, the department ranked second over-all in composite scores of all senior residents who took the PAFP Annual In-service Examination.  Only Silliman University Medical Center had a better general average.

Finally, the faculty members and consultants also found themselves in the limelight.  Drs. Alex J. B. Alip, Jr and Irene Maglonzo were re-elected as National Executive Secretary and National Treasurer of the 6,000- strong organization.  Drs. Josephine Dizon and Josefina Lapena also made it to the National Board of Directors.
